Funded in Queensland: a Certificate III earned without leaving the department
HLT37015 Certificate III in Sterilisation Services is now government subsidised in Queensland for eligible learners. Technicians train on the floor, in their own department, on their own roster.
What’s changed for Queensland health services
- Government-funded training is now available. SWC Training is an approved Queensland Government Skills Assure Supplier, offering the HLT37015 Certificate III in Sterilisation Services under the Career Start funding program. SWC is listed as a funded provider on the Queensland Skills Gateway.
- Funding is available for eligible learners. Eligibility is assessed individually, and a student co-contribution fee applies.
- Funding is primarily targeted at those new to the industry. Generally, learners who have completed a Certificate III or higher qualification within the past 10 years are not eligible, although exceptions apply to qualifications completed at school.
- Learners must be employed in a sterilisation department. Our workplace-based delivery model allows learners to develop their skills and complete assessments in their existing role, supported by an experienced trainer and assessor.
- Flexible training with no campus attendance. The qualification comprises 14 units delivered over approximately 9 to 12 months, with individual trainer sessions every 4 to 6 weeks and ongoing trainer support.

What is now funded in Queensland
Two things sit behind the word “funded”, and they are easy to confuse.
Skills Assure Supplier is the contract a training organisation holds with the Queensland Government. It is the approval to deliver subsidised training in the state. SWC Training holds one.
Career Start is the program a learner accesses. It is for job seekers who want to complete a Certificate II or III qualification in a priority or emerging industry. Eligible participants can undertake up to two funded apprenticeships or traineeships at these levels.
The news is that HLT37015 Certificate III in Sterilisation Services has been added to what SWC delivers under that contract. SWC Training appears on the Queensland Skills Gateway provider list for HLT37015 as a funded provider, alongside TAFE Queensland.
Funding is assessed learner by learner
Career Start eligibility covers age, residency and visa status, and generally excludes anyone who has completed a Certificate III or higher in the last ten years. Exemptions apply to school-based qualifications, Skilling Queenslanders for Work projects and foundation skills qualifications.
In practice, a technician new to the field is far more likely to attract a subsidy than a long-serving staff member who already holds a Certificate III. Queensland’s other main subsidy, Career Boost, funds Certificate IV and above, so it does not cover this qualification. If a Certificate IV is what your team needs, HLT47121 Certificate IV in Hospital or Health Services Pharmacy Support is funded in Queensland.
SWC checks eligibility for every learner as part of enrolment, so you know where each person stands before you commit. Where a subsidy does not apply, fee-for-service delivery is available and the training model is identical.
How the training works
The qualification is delivered where the work happens. Training and assessment take place in the learner’s own department, on equipment they already use, against the procedures their service already runs.
Each learner is supported by two people: an experienced workplace supervisor or mentor from their own team, and an SWC Trainer and Assessor who facilitates a Teams session roughly every four to six weeks for one-to-one support. Support continues by phone and email between sessions, and the final assessment is conducted face to face on site.
Nobody leaves the floor for a classroom. Rosters stay intact, and what a learner covers in a session is something they can apply in the same shift. Assessment uses workplace observation, oral and written questioning, and portfolio evidence, supported by third-party supervisor observations.
One entry requirement worth knowing up front
Because the qualification is assessed on the job, learners must already be employed in a role relevant to it, which in practice means working in a sterilisation department. Health services commonly enrol new starters shortly after they begin in the role, rather than training people before they are hired.

Why this matters on the floor
Sterilisation technicians work at the quiet end of the hospital and the sharp end of patient safety. That work gets more demanding, not less. Instrument sets grow more complex, standards tighten, and the margin for a missed step keeps shrinking.
“Education is one of the most important investments we can make in the CSSD workforce. Every instrument we process has a direct impact on patient care, and formal training provides technicians with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to consistently meet standards and support safe outcomes. Ongoing professional development strengthens workforce capability, helping CSSD professionals keep pace with the increasing complexity of healthcare while maintaining a strong focus on quality, risk management, and patient safety.”

Two ways health services use it
Bringing new people in
New hires and staff moving across from other parts of the service reach competence faster with a structured qualification behind them, and they finish holding a credential that travels. This is also where a Queensland subsidy is most likely to apply.
Formalising experienced staff
Technicians who learned on the job often do the work well without a qualification to show for it. Putting a Certificate III against that experience recognises what they already do, expands on why we do it, and gives the department documented, assessed competence.

Frequently asked questions
Is Certificate III in Sterilisation Services funded in Queensland?
Yes. HLT37015 Certificate III in Sterilisation Services is government subsidised in Queensland for eligible learners under the Career Start program. SWC Training (RTO 4567) holds a Queensland Government Skills Assure Supplier contract and is listed on the Queensland Skills Gateway as a funded provider for this qualification. Eligibility is assessed for each learner individually and a student co-contribution fee applies.
Who is eligible for Career Start funding in Queensland?
Career Start eligibility is set by the Queensland Government, not by SWC. Applicants generally must be aged 15 or over, no longer at school, permanently resident in Queensland, and an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or eligible visa holder. People who have completed a Certificate III or higher in the last ten years are generally excluded, with exemptions for school-based qualifications, Skilling Queenslanders for Work projects and foundation skills qualifications. SWC assesses eligibility for every learner as part of enrolment.
What identification do learners need to provide?
To confirm eligibility for Queensland funding, learners provide photo identification, either a driver licence or a passport, plus their Medicare card. SWC Training checks eligibility as part of the enrolment process.
Can existing CSSD staff who already hold a Certificate III access the funding?
Usually not. Career Start generally excludes people who have completed a Certificate III or higher in the last ten years, so a long-serving technician who already holds one is unlikely to attract a subsidy. Career Boost, Queensland’s other main subsidy, only funds Certificate IV and above, so it does not apply to HLT37015 either. SWC offers fee-for-service delivery for these learners using the same workplace-based training model.
What does it cost?
Where a learner is eligible for Career Start, the Queensland Government pays a subsidy toward the training and the learner pays a co-contribution fee set by the provider. Where a learner is not eligible, SWC delivers the qualification fee-for-service, with payment plans available. Contact the Queensland team for current figures for your health service.
Do learners have to leave the workplace to train?
No. SWC delivers HLT37015 in the learner’s own workplace, on the equipment and procedures the department already uses. The main scheduled commitment is a one-to-one session with an SWC Trainer and Assessor via Teams approximately every four to six weeks, plus time for a workplace mentor to supervise and support the learner. The final assessment is conducted face to face on site.
How long does it take?
SWC delivers HLT37015 Certificate III in Sterilisation Services over 9 to 12 months, structured around the learner’s roster and the department’s operational demand.
Do learners need to already work in a sterilisation department?
Yes. Because the qualification is assessed in the workplace, learners must be employed in a role relevant to it, such as a Central Sterile Services Department. Health services commonly enrol new starters shortly after they begin in the role.
Can we enrol a group rather than individuals?
Yes. SWC regularly works with health services training several sterilisation technicians at the same time and structures delivery around department rosters and operational demand.
What does the workplace need to provide?
An experienced supervisor or mentor to support the learner, access to the equipment and processes the qualification covers, and time for trainer sessions and the on-site final assessment. SWC works through the detail with each service before training starts.
Is the qualification nationally recognised?
Yes. HLT37015 Certificate III in Sterilisation Services is a nationally recognised Australian qualification from the HLT Health Training Package, issued by SWC Training, RTO 4567.
